My name is Michael Maugere and I have been in law enforcement for 24 years. I was named Chief of Police in December of 2014, following a four month tenure as Interim Chief of Police and currently hold a Master Peace Officer certificate. My police career began at the Smithville Police Department in November of 1993 and I relocated to the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office in May of 1998. While at the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office, I advanced through the ranks of Investigator, Patrol Sergeant, and Narcotics Investigator. In October of 2006, I returned to the Smithville Police Department as the Patrol Lieutenant.
I served on the Bastrop County Special Operations Unit (SWAT) from 1999 to 2006.
I served in the U.S. Army from January of 1987 until January 1992 and attained the rank of sergeant. During my enlistment, I was deployed to Iraq during Operation Desert Shield/Storm.
I am involved with many activities within the community and have a proactive approach by deterring criminal activity by showing police presence and engaging the public to learn their concerns, thereby preventing crime from occurring in the first place.
